Lots of exciting openings to tell you about in Gastown these days. The latest is a highly specialized eatery called Bao Down who will serve Asian street food, consisting mainly of steam bun — or bao bun — sandwiches.
Their male crew has taken over the short-lived Lily Mae’s space near the corner of Powell and Carrall, and on day one, they were sold out in hours.
Owners Matt Adolfo, Behzad Soltani and Greg Edwards offer a straightforward menu making it nice and easy to decide what to order. Choose from six steamed bao buns, six street sandwiches and six side dishes, including sweet potato kung fu fries, kimchi fries and a watercress salad.
Along with rich and sinful menu items, like the Bao Chicka Bao Bao, filled with fried chicken and garlic scape mayo, Boa Down offers a handful of healthy-ish dishes, like the Vevo (a vegan bao bun with tamari baised shitake mushrooms) and a Vancity fresh veggie sandwich.
