Best Birthday Cakes in Vancouver

Looking for the best birthday cakes in Vancouver? Here are my favourites, based on three important criteria: ingredients, aesthetics…and taste. “Eating with your eyes” takes on a new meaning when it comes to this celebratory indulgence. The exemplary cake baker is an artist when creating a masterpiece that ‘woos the senses’…even before the first bite. But, as in all aspects of life, looks are nothing without depth and flavour. This list reflects the best of both genres. Behold, some of the most charming, impressive and mouthwatering cakes in the city.

Nestled in the heart of Yaletown, independently-owned Sweet Bakeshop believes “the taller the cake, the better”. Peggy Porschen Academy-trained pastry chef Tessa Sam creates jaw-dropping cakes, and with high quality ingredients like Callebaut chocolate, Nielsen Massey vanilla and real butter, they’re quality, too. Ombre icing, sprinkles and tempting “drippy edges” are some of the extra creative touches that put Sweet’s cakes over-the-top.

Nostalgia is Baker Claire Livia’s favourite ingredient. Her flavours are reminiscent of delicious childhood festivities. One of the most fun cakes she ever made was modelled after the 100 Grand Chocolate Bar with layers of dark chocolate cake, caramel and milk chocolate, covered in rice krispies and dark chocolate ganache. You won’t see much fondant in Claire’s work; she prefers buttercream, caramel or meringue frosting. Cakes range from $30 to $75 and you can order via email:
