Best Vegan Brunch in Vancouver

Work all week, brunch all weekend. This is our motto.

Brunch can be decadent and heavy — it can leave us questioning whether or not that extra side of french toast was such a great idea. That’s why plant-based brunches are the best. They provide all the pleasure, without the pain. When meat and dairy is removed from a menu, you might be amazed by the creative plant-based alternatives concocted by Vancouver’s most forward-thinking chefs. Think coconut creams, and cashew dips, buckwheat sweets and unique smoothies.

Here are our favourite restaurants with plant-based brunch options in Vancouver.

The Acorn

3995 Main St | 604-566-9001 $$$ | Vegetarian

@acornvancouver | Visit website

These guys are leading the way as far as vegetarian and vegan food goes here in Vancouver. Flavour-wise, The Acorn kills it, and their mandate for supporting local and organic is impressive. They’re popular for their ever-evolving dinner options and have recently launched an equally delicious brunch menu. We recommend The Artichoke (their take on fried chicken and waffles), made with Southern fried artichokes, house made waffles, pickled shallots, bourbon maple syrup and mushroom gravy….so good.

Yew Restaurant + Bar

791 W Georgia St | 604.692.4939 $$$ | Seafood

@fsvancouver | Visit website

With a side menu just for vegans, Yew is one of our top choices for brunch destinations in Vancouver. The menu is constantly changing and consistently delicious. Chef Ned Bell regularly offers vegan brunch pastas -- proving there’s no wrong time for pasta. Our favourite is the Cashew Cream Pasta, with a cashew puree, wild mushrooms, chili, roasted cashews and chimichurri.

Heirloom Vegetarian

1509 W 12th Ave | 604-733-2231 $$ | Vegetarian

@heirloomveg | Visit website

Heirloom is another staple in the vegan and vegetarian community. They boast an expansive brunch menu: half vegan, half vegetarian. It’s hard to resist their Buckwheat Pancakes, layered and topped with house-made seasonal compote and cashew coconut cream. The hearty California Hash is a close second, with organic Saskatchewan quinoa nut fritters, collard greens, yams, bell peppers, hash browns, and a creamy cilantro sauce.

The Birds Nest

Birds Nest Underground Dining

Secret | $$ | Brunch

In terms of ambience and experience, Birds Nest is our top pick. This is a private, underground dining experience in celebrated local chef Marika Richoz’s South Granville apartment. The layout is cozy and quaint and the homemade food is amazing. Email ahead of time to make a reservation -- spots do fill up quickly as seating is limited. The menu is often posted on their website.

ZEND Conscious Lounge

1130 Mainland St | 778-588-6688 $$$ | Vegan

@zendlounge | Visit website

Zend is our favourite newcomer to the vegan brunch scene. Their vegan quiche is unusually delicious and the coconut whip on the buckwheat pancakes is worth getting seconds of. While you’re there, be sure to try their a shot of their signature Zend Kava. And though not listed on their brunch menu, their nut cheeses by Chef Karen McAthy are worth a shout-out. If you can get your hands on some, you won't regret the splurge.

Nuba (Kits)

3116 W. Broadway | 604-336-1797 $$ | Lebanese

@nubatown | Visit website

Hopefully Nuba will expand brunch service to all their locations, but currently it's exclusively available at their beautiful, vaulted-ceilinged Kits location. The smell of Turkish Coffee fills the room with scents of dark roast and rose water. Our go-to is the Healthy Wake-Up, made with mjadra, avocado, sautéed spinach, onions, mushrooms, and peppers served with roasted potatoes and cherry tomatoes. They also offer house-made, fresh-pressed juices.

La Mezcaleria

1622 Commercial Dr | 604-559-8226 $$ | Mexican

@lamezcaleriayvr | Visit website

Mariachi music and Mexican brunch. Sign us up. We love the decor and vibe at La Mezcaleria. If you're wanting brunch cocktails, this is the spot for you. Plus, they’ve got lots of vegetarian and vegan options and a nice variety of house made hot sauces. The hash browns are our favourite in town. We never leave without having at least two side orders.

Bandidas Taqueria

2781 Commercial Dr | 604-568-8224 $$ | Mexican Fusion / All-day Breakfast

@bandidastacos | Visit website

Another pioneer on Vancouver's plant-based food scene. Inspired by Mexico, the flavours are super clean and fresh. The line-up can get long, but the turnover is quick, so don’t be intimidated by a queue. Our top menu pick is Alan’s Breakfast: romaine served with purple cabbage, cilantro, pinto beans, balsamic vinaigrette, guacamole, and apple salsa, served with hand-made corn tortillas. We always opt for the add-on of roasted yams, as well.

The Juice Truck Cafe

Juice Truck

28 W 5th Ave | 604-719-8861 $$ | Vegan

@juicetruck | Visit website

If you’re like us, you like your breakfast in beverage form. We (The Juice Truck) have a range of nutrient-dense smoothies and cold-pressed Juices. If you like to start your weekend with a workout, follow it up with a healthy, delicious smoothie. Soon, we'll be launching a Sunday Brunch series. Everything will be vegan and gluten free -- stay tuned for the announcement and menu details!

The Wallflower

2420 Main St | 604-568-7554 $$ | Modern Diner

@wallflowerdiner | Visit website

The Wallflower modern diner is located in a great, eclectic neighbourhood, and just happens to be next door to our favourite book store, Pulp Fiction (perfect for killing time if there's a line-up). The menu hits home with vegan comfort foods like Vegan Peanut Butter Banana French Toast, Vegan Bennys on Portobello Mushrooms and our favourite, the Tofu Rancheros with corn tortillas, hashbrowns, chili, baked beans vegan cheddar, salsa and guacamole, tofu ricotta.
