Best Vegan Ice Cream In Vancouver

Vancouver is a city full of ice cream lovers, and our numerous options reflect the growing demand for this popular comfort food. From endless summer lines (that reach city-block-lengths) to winter-time cravings, our ice cream joints are busy year-long. Consequently, there has been a steady growth in the industry since Earnest Ice Cream began paving the local scene back in 2012.

Next time your frozen treat cravings hit, give one of these dairy-free scoops a go and you just might find yourself craving these delicious plant based options instead of their dairy counterparts…

Did you know… studies show that few of us can properly metabolize dairy? Dairy isn’t for everyone, whether it be for ethics, health, diet or all of the above. But good news…the 0% dairy options are no longer a compromise.
Here are our top spots for Vegan Ice Cream in Vancouver:

Umaluma

235 East Pender Ave | $$ | Gelateria

@umalumagelato | Visit website

Of all the dairy-free gelatos we've tried, this one tastes the most like traditional cow's milk gelato...you can't taste the coconut! Made with coconut cream, hemp milk and cashew butter, owner Ian Bruce and his team have absolutely nailed their gelato recipes. Each of the 20 flavours are absolutely exploding...it's almost impossible to pick a favourite, but if we must...Drunken Cherry.

Kokomo

611 Gore Ave | $ | Plant-based Cafe

@heykokomo | Visit website

Kokomo is the only place in Canada to get a cup of Cocowhip, an Australian soft-serve made with coconut water. Airy and light, this irresistible dessert is also free of refined sugars.

Earnest Ice Cream (Mount Pleasant)

1829 Quebec St | 778-379-0697 $$ | Ice Cream Shop

@earnesticecream | Visit website

Earnest is the original player in Vancouver's ‘modern’ ice cream movement. In 2012, owners Ben and Erica started-up as a food cart at the local farmers markets and have since grown into, arguably, the city's most in-demand scoop spot. They always have at least one vegan ice cream option, which is usually coconut-based.

Rain or Shine Ice Cream

Rain or Shine Ice Cream Kitsilano

102 - 1926 W 4th Ave | 604-428-7246 $$ | Ice Cream Shop

@rainorshineyvr | Visit website

Rain or Shine's line-ups rival Earnest's during peak ice cream season. Their vegan flavours are on rotation and always on point. A permanent plant-based menu item is their 'Vegan Yumaste Sundae', which features the current vegan scoop, plus chocolate sauce and hazelnuts. You will NOT regret ordering this extravagant, delicious creation!

Mister

1141 Mainland St | 778-379-2833 $$ | Ice Cream Shop

@madebymister | Visit website

One of the recent additions to the Vancouver Ice Cream scene. Mister’s offering is different then the usual scoop experience. There’s a bit of a performance that goes into the making of a cup of Mister Ice Cream. They make each serving per order, using liquid nitrogen. The liquid nitrogen creates an unmatched creaminess in texture due to the rapid freezing process, which prevents the formation of large ice crystals. Their vegan offering also rotates, but it is the most similar in terms of texture and flavour to its dairy full counterpar

Say Hello Sweets (Food Truck)

Mobile | $$ | Artisan Ice Cream

@sayhellosweets | Visit website

A new Vancouver food truck also offering 100% dairy free desserts. Owner Naomi Arnaut offer scoops, ice cream sandwiches and more. The best way to find her sweet food truck down is to follow her on Instagram (@sayhellosweets) to see where she's setting up shop OR head to her partner snack shop, Friendly, where you can buy ice cream cones, tacos and pints.

The Juice Truck (Yaletown)

1022 Mainland St | $$ | Plant-based Cafe

@juicetruck | Visit website

The only true vegan soft serve in Vancouver, made with creamy house almond milk. Choose from straight vanilla or, my favourite, the turmeric, made with Juice Truck's tangy turmeric juice. Topped with house made granola and pineapple, this frozen treat is 'almost' healthy.

Bella Gelateria (Coal Harbour)

1001 W Cordova St | 604-569-1010 $$ | Gelateria

@bellagelateria | Visit website

Winner of best Gelato in the whole world a few years back. Not a bad credential to have. They’re sorbet offerings are all vegan and their waffle cones, which are delicious, are also vegan.
