The announcement of Birks‘ 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympic Games sponsorship was almost as exciting as my discovery that Culinary Capers was event caterer of ’Celebrate The Sparkle of the 2010 Winter Games’.
As I entered the flagship store, where Olympic silver-medalist Jenn Heil would be unveiling her jewelry collection, my eyes lit up at the sight of these:
Mini Macaroon Moguls covered in sparkles! I hesitated very briefly, wondering about the digestion glitter. They were too pretty to resist. Plus, the Vancouver Olympics are perhaps once in a lifetime – as were the festive ‘snow balls’, created for the special day by clever Pastry Chef Kim Collishaw.
Also concocted for the breakfast event of a champion were petite bread bowls with leek, mushrooms, fresh herbs and Gruyere cheese – a perfect, easy bite, oozing with deliciousness:
Rich, baby sandwiches with miniature Parmesan scones as bread, filled with Black Forest ham, grainy mustard and wild greens:
And in my books, a morning isn’t complete without fruit and a baked good. These colorful kebabs and carrot zucchini pecan coffee cake filled with roasted pear compote, topped with almond granola (!) did the trick:
Great gals Erin Cebula, Cora Mau, and Christie Lohr were loving it all, too.
The breakfast bites were as unique as Jenn’s designs and her one-of-a-kind medal. Isn’t she cute? So humble, too.
After the unveiling, a few speeches, and plenty of roasted pear compote-filled coffee cake, Christie and I took off for a special FMA interview at the Qube Film Studio.
On the way out, Vancouver Fashion eZine‘s Editor Marilyn R. Wilson suggested I question my upcoming interview subject about her dad’s old slipper factory. Tidbits like this are golden. You should watch the full interview March 6 at 10:30pm on KVOS to see what the Canada’s Next Top Model Judge said when I asked if she ever ditches the five inchers for some good ol’ slips.
Despite the leather, the high fashion, and of course the massive heels (a staple), Fashion Television’s Jeanne Beker was fun, engaging, and easy to talk to.
While in Vancouver covering fashion-related Olympic events, she enjoyed dining at Trattoria (unfortunately didn’t get to try the brussel sprouts, my fav). As usual, I recommended Chambar for amazing ambiance and food any night of the week.

Ciao for now.
