Vancouver Staycation at Pinnacle Pier

*We have a winner for the Pinnacle Pier one night stay + $100 dinner contest! —>

Continue reading the full post:

Sometimes, you just need to get away, even if it’s just for one day…

Interested in enjoying a view from this seaside location?  Scroll down for details on how you can enter to win an overnighter and $100 towards dinner at the Pinnacle Hotel at the Pier.

But first, here are ten reasons why the peaceful waterfront hotel is an unparalleled location for your next Vancouver staycation…

1.  Bustling downtown Vancouver, less than two miles away, seems a million miles away from the North Shore’s Pinnacle.  Seabus transportation time: 10 minutes.  Check the transit schedule here.

2. The Pinnacle Hotel’s Lobby Restaurant menu has been revamped since first opening.  Each dish I tried blew me away.  Clearly, they recognize that ‘to die for’ food is a vital part of a getaway.

Plump Prawns & Qualicum Beach Scallops in a saffron tomato beurre blanc – so fresh, I would’ve guessed they were caught off the hotel’s own pier.

3. Marvelously meaty Local BC Crab Cakes made with red pepper, chives, and Dungeness Crab.  The proportion of vegetable to crab was at least 1 to 20.

4. The most to die for item of the dining experience: Roasted Vancouver Island Sablefish. Four words: soy brown sugar glaze.  The buttery, house made bbq pork fried rice was also addictive.  This dish is dangerously delicious.

5.  Slow-roasted Baby Back Ribs smothered in stout bbq glaze, served with intensely creamy garlic mashed potatoes and vegetables.

6. Generously portioned Crème Brûlée…so delicious, I wanted two.

7.  After the dinner splurge, take a long walk on the Burrard Dry Dock Pier and check out Wallace Shipyard, which used to be the largest in Western Canada.  This area, known as Lower Lonsdale, is the next Yaletown.

8.  Head back to your room to enjoy its stunning views.

9. You will not want to leave your glorious Pinnacle bed, but once you do, head back down to Lobby for a light breakfast.  They will gladly make any healthy meal substitution for you.

10. Lonsdale Quay Market is within eyesight from Pinnacle Hotel and, for many Vancouver, is a closer fresh produce option than Granville Island Market.  Stock up on your daily goods and locally made products, like vegan baking.

Though my family home is a five minute drive from Pinnacle Hotel at the Pier, I’d sooner stay in their lap of luxury than my familiar, cozy rancher.  They are without a doubt the best hotel in North Vancouver.

10 Reasons To Visit Tulalip Resort Casino

Although I’m a morning person and rarely make it past the gaudy club stint to the pinnacle of a night out  (the apres-bar dining session at some rip-roaring hole-in-the-wall), I love Vegas.  Done right (with top 40 and a/c blasting), the experience can be epic.

Spontaneous trips to the buffet capital of America are affordable.  But who really wants to endure a back-breaking flight (potentially sitting next to a ‘talker’), inhale circulating air, and risk losing luggage (jam-packed with tiny garments)?  Not I.

For an equally entertaining getaway, consider traveling just South of the border to Tulalip Resort Casino for the following ten reasons.

1.  Tulalip Bay Fine DiningBecause the seafood is as fresh as Vancouver’s, but the portions are bigger!

Don’t let the nearby casino fool you.  Upon entrance to Tulalip Bay, you’ll first be impressed by its grand dining room that matches this private one, pictured above.  You’ll then be blown away by the creative, gourmet dishes by chef Dean Shinagawa, like this perfectly cooked Certified Angus 8oz Filet Mignon served in a Cabernet Rosemary Demi with Yukon garlic potatoes and asparagus:

And trust esteemed sommelier Tommy Thompson to suggest the perfect wine to go with your dinner.  With him at the helm of the wine list, Tulalip Bay has won countless awards in the category, including the ‘Washington Award of Distinction’ from the Washington Wine Commission.

Another exceptional entree (large in size and flavor) is the Crab Crusted Alaskan Halibut with wok vegetables, wasabi mashed potatos, and Sriracha chili sauce – incredibly moist and tender.  Crab should top seafood more often.

2.  Blackfish Wild Salmon Grill & BarBecause when it comes to First Nations cuisine, you won’t find much other than bannock served in Vancouver.

Butter is obviously the most delicious spread out there.  Americans are world leaders in regards to its usage – West Coast Americans are no exception.

Here at left is not gelato, but three very large balls of butter: Cheddar Horseradish, Walla Walla Onion Blue Cheese, & Sweet flavored.  I half expected a spoon to be delivered with them.

Since I’d reached my max daily intake of butter, I asked that my Maine Lobster Tail (ordinarily poached in the yellow stuff) be steamed.  It was still drool-worthy, especially dipped in the wild mushroom beurre blanc served on the side.

And here’s the house specialty, ‘Salmon on a Stick’, which is a proud piece of the Tulalip Tribe’s heritage, made from the recipe of an elder’s wife.  Find this in Vegas.

3.  Eagles BuffetBecause the ‘hungry man’s’ restaurant is on Canada’s endangered list.  Those still standing are hard to find among the plethora of sushi joints and yoga studios.

Chinese wok-fried dishes

Tulalip’s award-winning buffet is our closest great all-you-can-eat restaurant.  Practically everything you could possibly crave is within its walls.  I’m talking rotisserie chicken, a Mongolian grill, a Southern section, and even sugar-free desserts made with Splenda to go with your diet coke and cheeseburger.

4.  GamingBecause the Tulalip area is smaller (and therefore safer) than Vegas which means a lowered risk of being mugged of your winnings.  Also, it won King 5′s award (among others) for best casino in Western Washington.

Photo courtesy of Tulalip Resort Casino

5.  Tulalip’s AmphitheatreBecause it’s closer than Merritt, and seldom do unsung country music stars like heartthrob Blake Shelton make it to Vegas or Vancouver.

And the atmosphere, created by energetic fans (many being cowboy boot-wearing females), is contagious – as was the love for Blake, who Tweeted at @Miss604 about his love for Canadians a minute after she wrote to him.  This obviously won us over instantly.

6.  The Technology SuiteBecause if you’re more of a homebody, at least you have this monster Mac and a 70” LCD TV in your suite to play with all night long as your friends gamble.

Photo courtesy of Tulalip Resort Casino

7.  Seattle Premium Outlets - A stone’s throw away from Tulalip Resort & the best I’ve ever experienced…worth at least three hours of border traffic WITHOUT snacks.

Photo courtesy of Seattle Premium Outlets

8.  Robert Pattinson aka Edward Cullen – Because you can breathe the very air he did while in Forks (Tulalip’s neighboring town) filming a series of movies that you may not have heard of unless you’re a twelve-year-old girl.

9.  The T SpaBecause the Tulalip Tribe has mastered the art of relaxation and they offer great snacks in between treatments.

Orange infused ice water, dried fruit medleys, fresh fruit, and flavored nuts

10.  Boating at the Port of EverettBecause the only ships you’ll ride in Vegas are fake.

Vancouver Media Ferry Ride Touring Port Gardner Bay

Newly bonded Vancouver media discovering Everett's beautiful waters

Other activities to enjoy at the Port of Everett: kiteboarding, kayaking, biking, hiking, bird-watching, and waterfront dining (which is where you’d find me).

Needless to say, those who joined in Tulalip Resort’s eventful media trip returned to Vancouver feeling as though they’d made a discovery.  The U.S. vacation spot offers world class dining, an array of activities, and five-star service along the way.  It’s been added (next to Whistler, the Okanagan, and Seattle) onto each of our lists of great nearby destinations.

Osoyoos Celebrity Wine Festival: Chapter Two

Saturday, June 12: Nota Bene Release Party at Black Hills Estate Winery

By the second day of what had already proven to be a world class event, I was pretty much over the fact that Justin Bieber would not be showing his pretty little face.  The forever young Jason Priestley, however, did.

Back in the day, 90210 was banned from my family’s television, rendering Jason a forbidden fruit of sorts.  Interviewing him amid grapevines at the Black Hills Estate Winery Nota Bene Release Party was obviously a thrill.  And top it off, I discovered he’s a passionate foodie!  Jason took over one minute (at least) to ponder each of my following foodie questions before responding.  His answers were worth the wait.

Task 1: Interview Jason

Q: What’s your favorite restaurant in Vancouver?

A: Vij’s

Q: Name a food item you deem, ‘to die for’.

A: Spot prawns from Horseshoe Bay.  I grill them on bamboo skewers and also use them in a shrimp cocktail recipe from Barefoot Contessa.

Q: What’s the sexiest food?

- extra long pause -

A: Baked brie cheese with crusty bread for dunking.  Giddy up, mmm.  (I suggested adding mango chutney, but he felt as though that might be too acidic.)

Q: What’s your favorite comfort food?

A: Tarte tatin (a classic apple tart) made by my wife.

Q: What’s your favorite wine these days?

A: Alibi – a sauvignon/semillon from Black Hills Winery.

Q: What’s your favorite dessert?

A: I’m not a big dessert guy.

Task #2: Sample the occasion’s edible offerings

Mike Lyon, one of Canada’s greatest chefs, is currently starring in ‘Chef Off’, a brand new show on the Food Network.  His halibut dish was my pick of the day:

My weekend comrade, Christie Lohr, and I would’ve loved to spend the afternoon with Chef Lyon’s grape tomatoes.  They’d been baking in the Osoyoos sun to become the dried slivers you see topping this seared halibut fillet pictured above.  Drizzled with beet root gastrique and vanilla bean beurre blanc, they were absolutely to die for.

Also delicious was this simple pairing of multigrain fig bread and Salmon Arm goat cheese:

Here is celebrity chef Ned Bell’s concoction: ‘The Bell Burger’, made with Black Angus Beef short rib and house ground tenderloin lathered in bacon aioli and chipotle ketchup and served on an applewood smoked cheddar bun:

Task #3: Judge International Wine Showdown (B.C. cabs vs. California’s) hosted by ‘wine guy’ Jay Drysdale

Upon scanning the wine judging sheet, I gazed up at the eight identical-looking wines before me, wondering how I’d determine their ‘clarity’, using the Davis 20 point scoring system.  Fortunately, I was sitting between wine gurus Terry David Mulligan, host of radio wine show, ‘The Tasting Room‘, and Harry Hertscheg, executive director of the Vancouver Playhouse Wine Festival, whose printing I could easily make out.

Fellow judges included PR veteran Pamela Groberman and Ashley Pearson, a soon-to-be sommelier from Watermark Beach Resort.

In the end (with eyes forward) I chose Grgich Hills as my favorite wine, along with the other judges.  My buds, obviously rounding out the broad spectrum of palates, may be on the right path.

Osoyoos Celebrity Wine Festival: Chapter One

Photographed by Christie Lohr | styleninetofive.com

Justin Bieber was not a confirmed guest of the Osoyoos Celebrity Wine Festival.  Nonetheless, I was this excited (see left) to partake in an exclusive Okanagan weekend (June 10 – 13) boasting 8 celebrity chefs, 17 wineries, and 10 celebrity guests.

The trip began last Friday morning.  Fashion reporter Christie Lohr and I hit the road in a car oh-so suitable for the A-list weekend: a 2010 MINI Cooper Camden 50 (also pictured at left), generously provided by MINI Yaletown.

We savored the comfortable journey only to arrive at the brand new Watermark Beach Resort five hours later with over half a tank of gas remaining.  Unbelievable.  And the weekend was just beginning…

Friday night: VIP Reception & Beach Party at Walnut Beach

Upon arrival to the shindig attended by Jason Priestley, Steven Page, and Bruce Greenwood, I discarded my purse to ensure maximum dexterity for appy sampling.  Here are my two favorite concoctions, made by Justin Paakkunainen, head chef of Walnut Beach Resort.

Walnut Bruschetta with walnut butter – a sweet and nutty version of the Italian classic:

Cinnamon-Smoked Scallops on honey baguette with spicy micr0-green salad…for which I’d move mountains.  The seafood medallions were cured with an ice smoker architected by Justin, himself.

Black Hills’ Sauvignon/Semillon blend, ‘Alibi‘, is described as ‘fun and whimsical’ (the predominant characteristic I seek in a wine) and it paired beautifully with the canapes:

As the night carried on, Alibi’s label became prophetic.  I never ended up moving mountains for the honeyed canapes, but I did bend over backwards.

A few snapshots from the evening…

Thanks to Destination Osoyoos, Black Hills Estate Winery, e=mc2 Event Management,  Walnut Beach Resort, Spirit Ridge Resort, and Watermark Beach Resort for throwing a world class wine festival that I was honored to be a part of.

Perbacco: San Francisco’s Best Italian Ristorante

Do you know where you were conceived?  San Francisco is my special city.  It’s America’s foodie hotspot and location of a romantic getaway taken by my parents twenty-six years ago.

Ironically, it’s also where I recently fell in love.  The object of my affection: Perbacco Ristorante + Bar, located at 230 California Street.  Though on a flat road in the Financial District, it’s worth a trek up the city’s steepest hill in your most uncomfortable shoes.

There’s one thing I love more than my mother and that’s sashimi.  Perbacco’s sweet and savory ‘crudo’ (translation: raw) was an easy first course choice:

perbacco ristorante halibut erin ireland

The translucent local halibut was served on a slate with morel mushrooms, bright green fava beans, leek ash vinaigrette, and a sweet bottarga crema.  Its artistic appeal surpassed everything I viewed at The MoMA.

The second course rivaled a Vancouver favorite: Glowbal Group’s Lemon and Caper Roasted Brussel Sprouts, created by Ryan Gauthier.  I hope to someday judge a ‘side dish-off’ between him and Perbacco Chef Staffan Terje, whose variety is made with brown sugar, capers, shallots, and world-famous Parmigiano Reggiano:

perbacco ristorante brown sugar brussel sprouts erin ireland

Observing my passion for the green spherical veggies, Staffan reappeared with this second platter from Barbacco, his sister restaurant next door.  They were fried in duck fat, tossed with marinated chili peppers, and sprinkled with Maldon Salt, but otherwise similar.  Oy.  If their fat content wasn’t a recipe for death itself, I would’ve instantly died for them.

Now onto the brilliant main courses.  First up, Roasted Wolfe Ranch Quail Breast:

perbacco ristorante quail entree erin ireland

The minute I saw foie gras listed in this item’s description, I stopped reading.  Fantastically, the smooth, delectable substance was mixed with wild mushrooms, cream, slow cooked quail meat (tastier and oilier than chicken), wrapped with Swiss chard, then cooked just enough to crisp the skin.  Sitting in its natural jus, it was heaven.

Also on the table, Cunij Al Sive – Devil’s Gulch rabbit cooked with spiced red wine sauce and polenta:

perbacco ristorante quail entree erin ireland

Tender childhood pet rabbit memories couldn’t have spoiled this succulent experience.  The rich gravy-like sauce, South Carolina polenta, and Cavalo nero (Tuscan kale) were perfect accompaniments.

perbacco dessert erin irelandI love a man who insists on dessert.  After refusing the last course (the brussel sprouts had satisfied every craving – sweet and savory – I could have possibly endured), Staffan delivered this 1” x 1” bite of rhubard jelly atop creme fraiche.  The perfect end to a perfect meal.

Coast Executive Chef Josh Wolfe is to thank for the discovery of Perbacco, arguably San Francisco’s best Italian ristorante.  The exceptional dining he and Glowbal Group co-workers experienced a year ago had made an impression.

Vancouver left its mark on Venice-born Perbacco owner Umberto Gibin, as well.  Many years ago while visiting on a romantic conquest, he accidentally left his money-filled wallet in a cab.  A kind stranger sought him out and returned it, allowing the trip to flourish.  As fond as his memory may be, there’s no way it matches the warm feelings I have towards Perbacco and their brussel sprouts.

The Perbacco team’s favorite Vancouver eateries: Glowbal and Vij’s.  My favorite San Francisco restaurant: can you guess?  I look forward to visiting my new friends every time I return to my special city.  You should make the trip, too.

Kwame ‘The Snow Leopard’: What The Major Networks Didn’t Tell You

kwame the snow leopard comox erin irelandGhana’s Olympic ski team, Kwame ‘The Snow Leopard’, is indeed a rare breed, as his nickname implies.  Here are three reasons why:

1.  An experienced chess player, he refuses to play online due to the lack of eye contact with opponents.

2.  Before races, he pumps up to a little R&B (“R. Kelly?” I asked, pleased to discover that yes, we did share a favorite musical artist).

3.  Two university degrees bear his name (one is a Masters), and as you can see here, he likes to play reporter.

Thanks to Kwame’s sponsorship from the Mt. Washington/Comox community and a snazzy leopard-print truck from Ford Country Courtenay, the Olympian got to train on real ski hills, instead of his usual indoor terrain.

He is the feel-good story of the 2010 Winter Olympic Games and has been hit by every major media outlet in the world (ABC, BBC, and CNN, to name a mere few).

At 10pm, decked out for Mt. Washington’s Hawaiian party (which he attended with world-class entourage: hilarious manager Rich, menacing bodyguard/IT expert Dave, and organic-loving physiotherapist Tim), he and I had a little chat for the camera.  You should check out the full interview on FMA Entertainment Weekly – airing Saturday, February 27 at 1030pm PST on KVOS.

After grilling Kwame on topics I’m guessing CNN skipped (fashion, music, and art), I hit the hill in my toasty Orage snow gear for about five minutes.  Ha.  We were shooting our FMA segment intro.

Then for the good stuff : Kingfisher Oceanside Resort & Spa.  My cameraman Jonathan and I were treated to massive seaside suites with Westin quality beds (the plushest around), then a Pacific Mist Hydropath spa service (exclusive to North America).

The Holiday was on TV, Fanny Bay Oysters and a bottle of white had been left in the room, and while at the local supermarket grabbing some snacks, I made these fantastic product discoveries:

Green stuff: an incredibly smooth and deceivingly creamy twist on a condiment staple – Maille’s 3 Herb Green Mustard.

Red stuff: a must-try – Newman’s Own ‘Tequila Lime Salsa’.   Who would have thought?  It’s virgin and amazing.

My night was made.

Tuscan Fig Jam & The Breakfast Tree

Each morning, I jump out of bed for the love of breakfast.

As much as I enjoy my usual (All-Bran, a sliced banana, frozen blueberries, cinnamon and soy milk), I sometimes reminisce about these:

tuscan figs closeup erin irelandThat, my friends, is a perfectly ripe, candy-sweet, Italian fig that I picked from a tree in a Tuscan horse field.

I was advised to eat them regularly should I ever want to gain weight.  They are higher in sugar than most fruits.  Mama mia.

tuscan figs erin ireland 4Often, I would eat breakfast standing at the tree bearing these figs.  In the middle of Tuscany, near a small town called Cecina, there are no pesticides and no real need to wash the fruit.  Other than the odd fig bearing a little horse saliva, they were clean and natural.

I made jam and ate it often with Sopressata Veneta and Fontina:
