Chocolate Mint Superfood Smoothie with Avocado

“Chocolate comes from cocoa, which is a tree. That makes it a plant. Chocolate is salad,” – unknown

So true…right? This excellent quote applies well to this month’s avocado recipe because March is Dieticians of Canada’s Nutrition Month. And this Chocolate Mint Superfood Smoothie, made creamy with avocado, is healthier than it looks, especially if you’re looking to incorporate more cholesterol-free, healthy fats into your diet.

This recipe, which easily doubles as dessert, is a perfect creamy texture thanks to its ‘secret ingredient’: half an avocado. It’s mildly sweetened with dates (if you have a sweet-tooth, you may want to add some maple syrup) and given a subtle brightness with the other secret ingredient, lime zest (this trick is from a Jamie Oliver chocolate mousse recipe). Hope you love this tried-tested-and-true Mint Chocolate Milkshake Smoothie as much as I do!

Ingredients

1 ½ c. nut milk of your choice
½ ripe avocado from Mexico
4 big dates
4 tbsp cacao powder
1 heaping tbsp chia seeds
1 heaping tbsp cacao nibs
Small handful mint leaves (~12 leaves)
4 drops peppermint extract (optional)
4 ice cubes (if you like it extra rich and creamy, freeze coconut milk into ice cubes and use these instead)
Zest of ½ lime
½ tsp. pure vanilla
Maple syrup (optional – if you prefer sweeter)
Coconut whip (optional – for garnish)
Dairy-free chocolate chips (optional – for garnish)

Directions

  1. Add all ingredients to a blender and puree until silky smooth.
  2. Taste test to ensure the sweetness level is to your liking – if it’s not, add a tablespoon or two of maple syrup.
  3. Optional toppings include coconut whip, dairy-free chocolate chips and mint sprigs. Enjoy!
