Four Fantastic & Affordable Wines for Valentine’s Day

Love is in the air this week and to enhance the romance, I’ve put together a quick V-day wine-shopping list to set the mood for you, your loved one and your pocket book!

8th Generation, ‘Confidence’ Frizzante, Okanagan BC, 2012

Lightly fizzy and packed with flavours of sweet red berries, this pink semi-sparkler is the perfect way to start off your V-day celebration. The palate is fresh and lively with notes of cranberry and citrus fruit. Delicious with shellfish, light appetizers or on its own.  ($23 – BC Liquor Stores)

Chateau D’astros, Provence Rose, France 2012

A dry and savory rose with fresh floral aromas and a kiss of strawberry on the palate. This richly textured rose has a subtle earthy background that happily stands up to roast chicken, veal chop or a light oil based pasta. ($19.99 – BC Liquor Stores)

Henry Fessy, Saint Amour, Cru Beaujolais, France, 2009

This romantically named red made from the Gamay grape will charm you with its silky texture and fresh fruity flavours of apricot and cherries. A long lasting finish with a hit of spice and cocoa will make for a great V-day pairing with poultry and game birds, a roast or cozy stew. Enjoy it slightly chilled. ($24 at Everything Wine Stores)

Gonzalez Byass, Pedro Ximinez, Viejo Noe, Sherry, Aged 30 years

For a sweet ending to the evening, this rich Sherry (call it “PX” for short) has a fig, plumy coffee-like and spiced bouquet. Fresh and silky to the palate, it blends wonderfully with dark chocolate, vanilla ice cream and all kinds of sweet desserts. How would I enjoy this? Poured over a bowl of Ernest Ice Cream’s Salted Caramel Ice Cream. Heaven! ($34 – BC Liquor Stores)
