GioBean Serves World-class Italian Espresso in the Heart of Kelowna

In lieu of a recent (very inspiring) gastronomic tour of Kelowna, this week’s 102.7 The Peak segments are dedicated entirely to the trip’s highlights. Next time you’re headed north to this lakeside Okanagan community, peruse this list for my culinary must-tries.

But first, coffee…

Giobean is widely known as one of the best spots in town for Italian espresso, but did you know that Italian-born owner Giovanni Lauretta is one of just 30 Douwe Egberts coffee specialists in the world and one of five coffee trainers in the United Kingdom to be recognized by the specialty coffee association of Europe?

“Gio” later spent two years on the UK Barista Championship judging panel before moving to Kelowna and opening his first cafe in 2010. Today, his new, bigger location is a major hotspot for Italian coffee lovers. You’ll be hard-pressed to find a barista and cafe owner with this kind of dedication, passion and international experience in a bigger city like Vancouver.

Gio knows coffee so well, that he can detect if a single roast in his blend is even slightly off. Milk is a focus too. If a certain batch isn’t quite right, he’ll notice and replace it.

And good news for Mission are residents: Gio and his wife Lucy will open a second smaller location called Giobean2Go in March.
