The Canucks preseason is officially underway and that means, before we know it, we’ll all be cramming into TV-filled drinking holes rooting for our boys. Just because sports bars are casual doesn’t mean they can’t offer well-sourced beer and thoughtfully prepared, delicious food.
One of my favourite game-watching spots in town is Red Card on Smithe, who has no shortage of seating (for large groups, too), a lengthy and very interesting beer menu, as well as, stone-fired italian pizza topped with local ingredients. They also offer eight appetizers (including crispy chicken wings, sliders and calamari fritti) that are steps above what the average pub offers.
If you’re heading to Rogers Arena for a game, expect to see a major improvement in their edible offerings. New chef Robert Bartley is upping the stadium’s standards by running an in-house butchery department, adding craft beers and cocktails to the menu (made by none other than well-known local barman Jay Jones), and pouring wines on FreshTAP, an eco friendly method that allows for a greater variety.
