Mindful Movie Night #18: The Ghosts In Our Machine

Mindful Movie Night is baaaaack!! We’ve missed it and we hope you have, too. Between babies and businesses, we (myself and The Juice Truck) have had our hands full these past couple of months but are so excited to be back at it. Moving forward, we’ll be hosting a Mindful Movie Night every two months.

Our next movie screening, co-hosted by Animal Justice, will feature The Ghosts in Our Machine, an award-winning, feature-length documentary many have called ‘the most powerful animal rights documentary’ out there. It’s happening Monday, March 12th at our favourite viewing venue, Stretch Yoga and Event Space in Chinatown. We’re extra excited for this one because the documentary’s filmmaker and main character — Liz Marshall and Jo-Anne McArthur will be joining us in person! After the film, we’ll have a group discussion and you’ll have a chance to ask Liz and Jo-Anne about their experiences.

We’re so excited to co-host this event with our good friend, Anna Pippus of Animal Justice. She and her team do incredible work for animals at the legislative level. Learn more here.

With the exception of our companion animals and the wild and stray species within our urban environments, we experience animals daily only as the food, clothing, animal tested goods and entertainment we make of them. This moral dilemma is largely hidden from our view.

“The Ghosts In Our Machine” illuminates the lives of individual animals living within and rescued from the machine of our modern world. Through the heart and photographic lens of animal rights photojournalist Jo-Anne McArthur, audiences become intimately familiar with a cast of non-human animals. From undercover investigations to joyful rescue missions, in North America and in Europe, each photograph and story is a window into global animal industries: Food, Fashion, Entertainment and Research. THE GHOSTS IN OUR MACHINE charts McArthur’s efforts to bring wider attention to a topic that most of humankind strives hard to avoid.

Are non-human animals property to be owned and used, or are they sentient beings deserving of rights? Read more at theghostsinourmachine.com

If you’re wondering whether there are graphic scenes in the film, here’s what one viewer said:
‘The documentary is a refreshing departure from its more rational-minded predecessors that throw facts and data at us while barraging audiences with violent sounds and images of slaughter and torture. Ghosts instead confronts with the unforgettable grace of animals many of us so easily shut out from our daily thoughts, as industrial capitalism distantly spins its cogs of exploitation on farms, in labs and factories and abattoirs.’

Our friends at Quantum Coffee (check out their beautiful Granville Street cafe below, which is connected to co-work space, BrainStation) will be bringing some of their delicious coffee (with soy, almond and coconut coffee creamer options), To Die For is supplying coconut peanut butter powers balls and Juice Truck is serving some of their amazing cold-pressed juice! All snacks are complimentary.

Price: Free! We do however accept donations, all of which will go to Animal Justice.
