New Restaurants in Vancouver 2014

Here’s a list of new and notable restaurants that opened in Vancouver in 2014

Roots + Fruits

848 Powell St | $ | Plant-based Cafe

@rootsandfruitscafe | Visit website

Just what every neighbourhood in the city needs: a health food cafe focused on sourcing ingredients responsibly, handcrafted local products and cold pressed juices. The tiny space, catering largely to the grab 'n go customer, will offer grain and veggie bowls, avocado toast, chia pudding and more. This is the second restaurant venture for Notturno's co-owner Scott McTavish.

958 Main St | 604-773-3805 $ | Modern Asian

@torafukuyvr | Visit website

The first brick and mortar location from the gutsy flavor-extremists of Le Tigre food truck. Their 2000 sq ft, 50-seater space will feature tapas-style Asian fusion that owners Clement Chan and Steve Kuan say will be totally different from what they've done in the past. Good news for impatient / grab 'n go customers, their truck will be parked outside the restaurant to serve you.

Rain or Shine (Cambie)

3382 Cambie St | 604-428-7246 $$ | Ice Cream Shop

@rainorshineyvr | Visit website

A second location for husband-and-wife team Josie Fenton and Blair Casey whose “homemade” ice cream is as local and organic as possible...and insanely flavourful. Using a Philadelphia-style egg free base from Birchwood Dairy, the pair loves to support small local suppliers, like The Lemon Square, whose bars they’re using to create an ultra-decadent, chunky ice cream flavour. And you can feel less guilty about using their to-go materials: they’re all compostable. Vegans will be happy to know there’s always a plant-based option in the mix, as well as a seasonal sorbet.

Bao Down

12 Powell St | 778-379-3611 $ | Asian Street Food

@baodowngastown | Visit website

A simple yet genius concept focused on Asian street food (translation: steamed bao sandwiches, street food sandwiches and a few fun side dishes like kimchi fries). Choose from coconut crusted Ocean Wise Vietnamese catfish baos to healthier options like the "Vevo" which comes stuffed with tamari-braised shiitake mushrooms and a crazy amount of ginger peanut sauce. With 25 seats the place isn't huge, so you may want to take your buns to go. Latenight weekend craving? Bao Down is open until 2am on Fridays and Saturdays.

Sai Woo

160 E Pender St | 604-568-1117 $$ | Modern Chinese

@doyousaiwoo | Visit website

Cloaked in history, this 6000 square foot, two-storey eatery from restaurateur Salli Pateman is not the first “Sai Woo” to occupy the building. In the 1930s “Sai Woo Chop Suey” was one of the city’s most popular Chinese restaurants. With an all-star cast, including Chef Douglas Chang (West, Bambudda), the menu will showcase regional cuisine and local ingredients, many from Chinatown’s own pantry. Think tea-smoked tuna, coca-cola chicken wings and fermented red tofu-glazed pork belly.

The Greek by Anatoli

1043 Mainland St | 604-979-0700 $$ | Greek

@thegreekyt | Visit website

This might be the hippest Greek restaurant to ever open in Vancouver. With white-washed brick walls, row upon row of twinkly lights strewn from the ceiling and loud music, you feel like you’ve walked into a pre-party dinner scene on Mykonos. Count on good food and drink, including ultra-lemony potatoes, ridiculously tender octopus and creative cocktails with Greek yogurt and honey. Independently-owned and run by three millennials, two of which are sons of North Van’s Anatoli Souvlaki family, The Greek is open every day from 11am until late.
