Samurai Sushi: My Happy Place

When dining at an ethnic restaurant, it’s nice to be served by someone matching the food’s origin.  It adds a little something to the ‘authentic cultural experience’.  However, this sentiment, does not apply to ‘Samurai Sushi’, where I am happy to be served by a White, Black, or blind person.

Samurai Sushi should add me to their payroll under ‘promotions department’.  Since I love talking about food, I pass along this recommendation almost daily.

Specifically, it’s Samurai’s sashimi that keeps me faithful.  Their portion sizes are gargantuan.  Each inch-long thick piece is almost equal to the length of my iPhone – and when the only thing on your plate is sashimi, you need lots of it.  That’s why you’ll find me there often (very often).

The hundreds of dollars I spend there monthly are justified.  Seafood wholesalers can’t beat Samurai’s prices – this helps to relieve my guilt.  Plus, I don’t smoke, so what I’d be spending on cigarettes, I spend on full orders of tuna and salmon:

Can you believe it?  Isn’t it beautiful?  If you know of a sushi spot serving bigger/better pieces, please email me at erin@erin-ireland.com.

Of course, with a price of $11, its quality isn’t ‘Tojo’s’ – but, it’s fresh and I still find myself swooning over each bite, enjoying the tuna melt in my mouth (especially when dunked in Samurai’s oily spicy sauce) and the omega-3 rich flavor of the fatty salmon.  They’re buttery.

The maki is just as fantastic.  All ingredients used are deliciously fresh and the rice is moist.  But a note to small-mouthed people, like my mother: you may struggle – they are massive.

As you sit in the slightly stuffy, hole-in-the-wall restaurant anticipating the arrival of your sushi (or stand in line waiting for your to go – perhaps the better option) other patrons may smile at you.  I always interpret this as, the ‘knowing smile’: that you have both discovered Vancouver’s best kept sushi secret.

Ciao for now.
