Whitecaps FC Captain Jay DeMerit shares his favorite foods, including his go-to brunch spot in Vancouver.
The food you would most often describe as, ‘to die for’?
JD – Steak. I’m from Wisconsin, so we grew up with barbecues. On the side, I like traditional cut up mushrooms with butter, maybe cream.
Your favorite Vancouver restaurant?
JD – Alibi Room. It’s got a good vibe and the food is always really good quality. I like the Mezze plate to start off with; it’s really flavorful with hummus and olives. Usually, I get the lamb for dinner.
Your trashy indulgence? (eg. that late night 7/11 or drive-thru treat)
JD – Gummy bears. I do crave sweets a lot. I’ll also crave Cool Ranch Doritos or anything with bacon.
The food you refuse to eat?
JD – Nothing really. Just the normal seafood shellfish stuff, but it’s not really their fault, so I keep on eating them. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve tried more new things, and there’s a lot more that I like to enjoy. It’s always getting better.
The sexiest food?
JD – I’d say cherries.
Your favorite dessert?
JD – I don’t like a lot of dessert, just something small after dinner that hits the sweet spot like ice cream with sticky toffee pudding. It’s a great contrast of hot and cold.
Your favorite comfort food?
JD – Homemade soups. I just throw in a bunch of whatever’s there. I grew up with lots of farmers markets, so I use lots of fresh veg, chicken stock, then let it simmer for a while.
